Penitencia aims to unveil little-known aspects of the prison world by opening a space for reflection among citizens and proposing a debate about the conditions of exclusion and inequality of a society that punishes, but does not provide all its citizens with better opportunities to live fully. The documentary Penitencia is formed through interviews with express people, volunteers and experts from different areas who have shared their experiences and who remind us that the penal system is permanently failing. Spain is one of the European countries where fewer crimes are committed and where more is imprisoned. Our jails are full of convicts who do not benefit from adequate programs. The prison population, much of which suffers from mental illness and drug addiction, is increasingly impoverished and excluded from society. This situation becomes particularly serious in the case of women, who have fewer opportunities in their training, work and social relationship. Penitencia shows how the Norwegian penitentiary system solves this problem through prisons where the freedom of the person is also restricted, but with a more respectful approach and that facilitates social reintegration.
